Four out of 100 persons in Mombasa County are diabetic, the county department of health has revealed.

County coordinator of non-communicable diseases Esha Bakari said a majority of diabetic patients in the area are people aged above 40 years.

“We have noticed that this disease is a silent killer and has continued to affect many people, surprisingly many don’t know whether they have the condition,” said Bakari.

He raised fears that the number might be high owing to the fact that many people are unwilling to do health checkups.

“The biggest contributor of the disease in Mombasa is overweight; many people don’t like to do exercise and others have bad feeding practices,” she added.
