Health cabinet secretary (CS) Susan Nakhumicha has suspended eight National hospital insurance fund (NHIF) managers for allegedly colluding with hospitals to swindle funds through fraudulent claims.
The CS was responding to an expose’ done by NTV a local television channel revealing a number of private facilities in Nairobi and Meru were in cahoots with scrupulous NHIF staff to fleece unsuspecting Kenyans.
“The facilities under investigation include Jekim medical Centre in Meru central, St Peters Orthopaedic and Surgical Hospital in Kiambu county, Afya Bora Hospital in Mwea Kirinyaga, Joy Nursing and Maternity Hospital-Kamkunji, Afya Bora Hospital Annex-Mwea, Jekim hospital-Imenti South, Beirut pharmacy and Medial Centre and AMAL Hospital limited,” the CS said.
Consequently, The CS ordered Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Council (KMPDC)and the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) to immediately begin investigations on the facilities and file a report within 48 hours.
The cabinet secretary additionally instructed the affected facilities to transfer their inpatients within 24 hours to give way for KMPDC to commence their inspection. As a result the facilities according to the cabinet secretary will remain closed until the investigations have been concluded
The cabinet secretary has also invited the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to conduct a lifestyle audit on all NHIF officials commencing next month throughout the year
