Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) Economic Survey revealed that there is an increase in the number of new clients for family planning injections, pills progestin, implants insertions, and BTL sterilization for females, while there is a decrease in sterilization vasectomy for men.
According to KNBS economic survey released on May 20, 202, the number of women experiencing sterilization BTL increased by 15.1 percent to 4,727 while the number of men getting MALE sterilization Vasectomy decreased by 30.2 percent to 389 clients in 2023.
“In 2023, the use of Sterilization BTL, a surgical treatment that plugs the fallopian tubes to prevent ovum from being fertilized, increased by 620 from 4,107 in 2022 to 4,727, while Sterilization Vasectomy, or the blockage or cutting of each tube to keep sperms out of women, is a male contraceptive procedure. In 2023, there was a record fall in the number of clients, from 557 to 389, a total of 168 reduced clients.”
The number of new users of FP injections, which are effective in preventing births, increased from 572,775 in 2022 to 626,472 in 2023, resulting in a 53,697 rise. The number of revisits in 2023 went from 2,026,175 in 2022 to 2,216,415, representing a 190,240 increase
“Family planning injections, which are birth control injections that contain a hormone called depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA), which is similar to the hormone progesterone used to prevent pregnancy, were the most popular method of contraception, with 2.8 million clients, followed by implant insertions, which had 1.0 million clients.” Stated the report.
Report shows that in 2023, the number of new users of ICUD Insertion, a form of uterine contraception, decreased from 74,374 in 2022 to 73,457, resulting in a total drop of 917 new clients. The number of clients who returned declined from 65,223 in 2022 to 26,601 in 2023, bringing the total number of visits down to 38,622.

The pills combined Oral contraceptives which are oral contraceptives that contain estrogen and progestin decreased from 315,502 in 2022 to 191,487 in 2023, representing a 124,015 decline. Client revisits declined from 524,434 in 2022 to 312,825 in 2023, a fall of 211,609.
The number of new users of progestin-only pills, popularly known as birth control pills with no estrogen, increased from 115,602 to 121,609 in 2023, representing a 6,007 rise. The number of clients who returned increased by 1,407 from 117,198.
