The Ministry of health through the Pharmacy and Poisons Board has announced the recall of S-Prazo Batch No. SPZ-302, used primarily for the treatment of ulcers and acid-related conditions, following a packaging error that has raised serious concerns.
Specifically, S-Prazo capsules were found alongside Donystatin tablets, a combination that could lead to unintended consequences if consumed, therefore, PPB has urged members of the public to be on high alert when buying or selling S-PRAZO (Esomeprazole Magnesium Delayed-Release Capsules 40mg) Batch No SPZ-302 Manufactured by Laborate Pharmaceutical India Limited.
According to the Pharmacy and Poisons Board, S-Prazo Capsules and Donystatin Tablets are being recalled after there has been a market complaint on the mix up of blister strips.
“Some boxes were found to contain two different blister strips, i.e S-Prazo Capsules and Donystatin Tablets, within the same outer carton,” said Dr. F. M. Siyoi, chief executive officer, Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Kenya.
S-Prazo Capsules are used for the treatment of heartburn and certain other conditions caused by too much acid in the stomach. It also helps in the prevention of Ulcers and help prevention of erosive esophagitis.
Other than that, it is also used in the treatment of Helicobacter pylori infections. It may also be used for other conditions where the stomach makes too much acid.
The board has advised all pharmaceutical outlets, healthcare Facilities, healthcare professionals and the public to stop any further distribution, selling, issuing and use of the batch.
“The public are to return the specified batch to a healthcare facility or respective suppliers near them,”
The board has assured Kenyans of its commitment in protecting the public health. The public are encouraged to report any suspected cases of sub-standard medicines or adverse drug reactions.
The board has provided the channels that are to be used in case of a report concerning the drug. One can either report it to te nearest healthcare facility or pharmacy and Poisons Board through their email, website or phone call.
