Hospitals are embracing the new Social Health Authority as they submit claims worth over KES 1.6 billion in the one month since its launch helping. Pumwani maternity is such hospital in the forefront of integrating Social Health Authority (SHA) services to improve access to essential maternity and neonatal care.
During a site visit by Cabinet Secretary for Health Dr. Deborah Barasa, Director General of Health Dr. Patrick Amoth, and other Ministry and SHA representatives. The hospital through its CEO Christine Kiteshuo highlighted its efforts in integration of SHA.
This comes as Kenya is trying to stay on track on maternal and neonatal health, in the past one month there was recorded number of 9,200 maternity visits totaling around Sh152.3 million. Over the past month “Pumwani hospital supports around 200,000 births annually and October was the hospital’s busiest month of the year, with 1,700 births, this underscores the critical role we play in maternal and child health.”
Since the SHA rollout on October 1, Pumwani has registered 970 mothers, increasing access to essential maternity and neonatal care. Community Health Promoters (CHPs) are actively working to boost enrollment and expand SHA’s reach to more mothers. Mothers interviewed expressed satisfaction with the SHA services, reflecting Pumwani’s commitment to quality care.
As SHA continues to roll out, Pumwani solidifies its leadership in maternity and neonatal services, advancing accessible healthcare for Nairobi’s mothers and children.
Speaking to journalists the CS reassured Kenyans of the government’s commitment to providing inclusive healthcare coverage. “The ultimate goal is to ensure all Kenyans can afford access to affordable and quality healthcare,” she said. “While the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) primarily focused on the employed, our aim with SHA is to extend health products and services to the last individual. We are using digital health as an enabler, and the SHA will ensure coverage from primary to the highest levels of care. This is only the beginning, as we strive to deliver quality care to Kenyans.”
Nairobi County CEC for Health, Suzanne Salantoi, also commended Pumwani hospital for its full adoption of SHA services.
The Social Health Authority (SHA) was established to improve access to essential healthcare services by providing financial support and easing claims processing for hospitals across Kenya.
