The world’s largest free knowledge movement is hosting the 2othedition of Wikimania in Nairobi Kenya, from 6th to 9th of August 2025.The flagship conference will be held both online and in person.
The event is organized by the Wikimedians of Kenya User Group, East African Regional, Thematic Hub (EARTHub) and Wikimedia Foundation and is expected to attract over r 1000 participants from over 120 countries.
Wikipedia which is a free, online based, collaborative encyclopedia is hosted the Wikimedia Foundation relies on global volunteers to contribute content and maintain the platform. Nearly 300,000 volunteers are behind creating the information on Wikimedia projects, which are viewed more than 22 billion times every month.
Maryana Iskander, Chief Executive Officer at Wikimedia foundation praised these volunteers saying, “Wikimania is a window into our global Wikimedia community. This conference is a celebration of the people, from every corner of the world, who contribute their time, passion, and skills to share knowledge.” she said,
This year’s theme is focused on Inclusivity. Impact. Sustainability, especially around the people who make Wikimedia projects possible.
The event will feature workshops, edit-a-thons, hackathons, policy discussions, and community meet-ups, a design that is set up in hopes to foster collaborations and expand access to knowledge. It will also feature key speeches from Wikipedia Founder Jimmy Wales, Wikimedia Foundation CEO Maryana Iskander, Dr. Joyce Nakatumba-Nabende of Makerere University’s Artificial Intelligence Lab, and Professor Vukosi Marivate from the University of Pretoria.
According to Iskander, the foundation chose to host its 20thanniversary in Africa as the region is critical in growing and shaping its projects.
“As the next one billion people come online, it is more important than ever to expand Africa’s contributions to the global knowledge ecosystem through the Wikimedia projects.”
The live streamed sessions will be translated into Arabic, French, English, Spanish, and Swahili.
