Sukari Industries Achieves Full Environmental Compliance, Bolsters Community Partnership
Share This:

Sukari Industries has achieved full environmental compliance, a significant milestone confirmed by a recent independent water quality assessment from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).

The company’s effluent discharge now meets all standards set by the Kenya Water Quality Regulations of 2024. This achievement reflects a major step in the company’s commitment to sustainable operations and stronger community relations.

A NEMA assessment conducted on July 18, 2025, sampled water from five points along the Kuja River and nearby underground sources. All tested parameters, including pH, dissolved oxygen, and chemical oxygen demand, were found to be within permissible limits. Notably, no contamination was detected in the underground water that supplies the local community.

Jacob Asembo, the Homa Bay County Director of Environment, officially confirmed the company’s compliance during a Senate Standing Committee visit. “Sukari Industries is compliant with all the laid-down regulations as required of them,” Asembo stated on August 13, 2025.

While celebrating this success, Sukari Industries acknowledged that environmental challenges persist due to upstream land use practices. The company is actively working with the community to restore riverbank vegetation and protect the watershed.

Edward Ahonobadha, Communications Manager at Sukari Industries, highlighted the company’s dedication. “These independent results validate our investment in environmental protection systems,” he said. “Beyond compliance, we are committed to transparent dialogue and partnership with the Ndhiwa community.”

He announced that a new communications department will ensure local concerns are heard and addressed promptly. The company also plans to launch new initiatives, such as borehole drilling and riverbank tree planting, to support community welfare and environmental sustainability.

Milton Orwe Obote, a community representative who participated in the water assessment, expressed cautious optimism. While encouraged by the improvements, he urged the company to expand its corporate social responsibility efforts to directly benefit local residents.

In a move to ensure long-term sustainability, NEMA has recommended that Sukari Industries conduct regular monthly effluent monitoring, implement contingency plans for heavy rainfall seasons, and partner with communities for reforestation along the Kuja River.

Sukari Industries stated its ongoing commitment to environmental excellence and fostering a peaceful coexistence that supports regional economic growth, community well-being, and natural resource conservation.
