Residents of Kakamega have been urged to do regular cancer screening.
Speaking on Tuesday during a two-day free breast and cervical cancer screening camp at St Elizabeth Hospital Mukumu, Administrator Sister Agnes Maulo said timely diagnosis enable early stage detection of cancer when it is treatable.
Screening can prevent further development of cancer by finding early lesions, which can be treated or removed before they become cancerous.
“We are targeting mothers between 18 and 60 years because they are the most vulnerable,” she said.
Medical officer in-charge, Dr Mercy Omondi, said there was need to bridge the gap between screening and medication, adding that most cancer cases are diagnosed late when nothing much can be done.
