Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO) has issued a 14-day strike notice citing failure by Government to meet their safety demands in the fight against coronavirus.
KUCO Secretary-General , George Gibore said yesterday the medical fraternity is distressed by unpreparedness and mishandling of Covid-19 disease, by the Ministry of Health and counties, especially with regards to protection and welfare of the frontline workers.
“The union has on numerous occasions raised concerns on the safety of health workers but the Government has been adamant and always treated this advisories with contempt at the expense of increasing demise of health workers and other poor Kenyans,” said Gibore, who spoke from Nairobi.
The union regretted that the Ministry of Health has spent millions to formulate policies and guidelines geared towards rational use of PPEs in all health facilities as part of streamlining and standardising management of Covid-19.
The union demanded that all workers in the vulnerable group — pregnant, above 55 years or with pre-existing medical conditions — be exempted from active frontline duty.
