The World Health Organization (WHO) foresees a looming health crisis in war-tone African country Sudan. WHO warns that the risk of disease outbreaks such as malaria, dengue fever, cholera and other diarrheal diseases, measles and polio has increased substantially in the country.
According to the WHO, the upcoming rainy season, poor disease surveillance, limited access to safe drinking water, and displacement of people has increase the risk of waterborne and mosquito-borne outbreaks,
War on Sudan erupted on April 15th 2023 pitting two warring factions the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). As a result, delivery of healthcare services has become increasingly difficult. According to WHO, in just two months of violence, about 11 million people have been put in dire need of health assistance.
The WHO warns that the crisis could spill over to the neighboring countries
The world Health Organization estimates that up to 67 percent of health care facilities in Sudan remain close as workers are under attack or are forced to flee the country
Furthermore, the WHO is appealing for a total of USD 145 million over the next half a year to respond to over 7.6 million people in need of urgent health assistance in the country as well as over 500 000 others taking refuge in the neighboring countries including Egypt, Chad, Central African Republic, South Sudan and Ethiopia
