Pharmacy and poisons Board(PPB) has undertaken a series of operations against illegal pharmaceutical companies operating in the rift valley region.

The enforcement operation that took place between June 3rd and 7th led to the arrest of over 30 people with the seizure of 120 cartons of assorted pharmaceuticals and closure of more that 100 illegal pharmacies.

PPB CEO Dr. F.M Siyoi said that the operation follows a comprehensive investigation into unlawful practices within the pharmaceutical industry which included illegal sale of prescription medications, fraudulent activities involving government drugs and unlicensed pharmaceuticals distribution channels.

“In response to unlawful pharmaceutical activities in the rift valley region, the board has undertaken a series of coordinated operations in collaboration with the National police service leading to significant outcomes,” said the CEO.

Dr. Siyoi further added that the boards core responsibility is to regulate pharmacy practice and ensure safety , quality and efficacy of medical products and health technologies.

“The board remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring the integrity of pharmaceutical supply chain,” added Dr. Siyoi.

Additionally, he said that the closure of the 100 rogue pharmacies will help disrupt the illegal supply chain as well as prevent harm to the public.

“The proliferation of illicit pharmaceuticals poses a significant threat to public health and safety and the board is dedicated to eliminating these activities and holding accountable those who endanger consumer well being,” he said adding that the arrested individuals are facing charges related to illegal distribution, sale and possession of pharmaceuticals.

Dr. Siyoi further assured the public of the boards commitment to continue monitoring and enforcing compliance within the pharmaceutical industry to ensure that only safe and legitimate medication are available to the public.

Furthermore, the board urged consumers 5o exercise caution when purchasing pharmaceuticals as well as obtain medications only from licensed reputable sources.
