Kenyan Network of Cancer Organizations Earns Global Recognition for Cancer Advocacy

The Kenyan Network of Cancer Organizations (KENCO) has been honored as 1st runner-up at the prestigious World Cancer Day Campaign Awards during the World Cancer Congress, held in Geneva.

The recognition was awarded based on KENCO’s exceptional contribution to cancer advocacy and public awareness, spotlighting their innovative strategies campaigns and commitment to reducing the cancer burden in Kenya.

KENCO Executive Director Phoebe Ongadi expressed pride in the recognition, noting the collective effort behind the achievement.

“We are incredibly proud of this achievement, which reflects the hard work and passion of our members and partners. This award is a testament to the power of collaboration in driving meaningful change for those affected by cancer.”

The award-winning submission that captured global attention centered around the Cancer Survivors Festival, held on May 31st, 2024, in Nairobi which was presented at the World cancer congress by Executive Director Phoebe Ongadi and Board Secretary Prisca Githuka.

KENCO was acknowledged for its impactful submission detailing the Cancer Survivors Festival held in Nairobi. The festival showcased KENCO’s ability to engage diverse groups and foster a shared commitment to cancer care.

The Nairobi Festival brought together over 500 cancer survivors, advocates, stakeholders, and the media, providing a powerful platform for celebrating survivorship and raising awareness of cancer prevention and control.

The World Cancer Congress, organized by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), is a significant global forum that brings together experts, organizations, and stakeholders to exchange insights and strategies in the ongoing fight against cancer.

KENCO’s recognition at the World Cancer Day Campaign Awards underscores its growing influence not only in Kenya but also at the global cancer control landscape.

The organization has been a driving force in advancing cancer advocacy, influencing policy change, and improving cancer care systems in Kenya. By focusing on health equity and public engagement, KENCO is playing a pivotal role in shaping the national dialogue on cancer prevention and treatment.

Beyond the award, KENCO’s work continues to inspire and set benchmarks for advocacy across Africa. Its success exemplifies how strategic partnerships, public education, and patient-centered initiatives can drive transformative change in healthcare.

As a leading voice in cancer control and advocacy in Kenya, KENCO remains steadfast in advocating for stronger healthcare systems, influence policy change and cancer care improvements and ensuring that the needs of cancer patients, caregiver’s and survivors are prioritized.
