An urgent call for blood has been issued by Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga following a tragic bus crash on the Kisumu-Kakamega road that left 25 dead.

The PS is appealing to members of the public to volunteer to donate blood as doctors at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) work tirelessly to save the 32 survivors.

A devastating road accident on the Kisumu–Kakamega road has prompted the urgent blood drive.

The crash involved a school bus carrying members of the Sigoti Clan from Nyakach, claiming 25 lives and leaving 32 survivors in critical condition.

PS Oluga announced the urgent blood drive to support the survivors.

The drive is scheduled for Saturday, August 9, 2025, at 9:00 AM at Leresian Park within Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH). The hospital’s Blood Transfusion Unit will manage the donations.

Dr. Oluga praised JOOTRH’s emergency response, noting that all survivors were attended to and admitted within three hours.

He highlighted how portable X-ray machines was instrumental in saving lives during the initial response.

Beyond the medical response, the Ministry of Health is providing social support to the affected families.

“A counseling tent has been set up, along with a communication desk to provide updates,” Dr Oluga said.

He added that the Ministry of Interior and National Administration will be on site on Saturday to assist the bereaved.

“Emergency medical teams are also working with police to secure the personal belongings of those involved in the accident.”
